Peter Shalulile moved level on the all-time PSL scoring charts with Siyabonga Nomvethe when he scored the second goal as Mamelodi Sundowns beat Magesi FC 2-0 on Wednesday.
The Namibian made history in the 87th minute when he showed great quality to firm up the result for Sundowns and score his 129th PSL goal, making it a historic night for him as he equaled Nomvethe’s mark.
Shalulile had started his first game of the season as Sundowns were looking to bounce back from their 1-1 draw with Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 semi-final first leg last weekend.
How did Sundowns turn it around?
After a first half when they laboured to break down Magesi, Sundowns turned on the style after the break, especially after the introduction of Thapelo Maseko, Tashreeq Matthews, Thapelo Morena, Marcelo Allende and Lebo Mothiba.
The Sundowns attack laid siege at Magesi’s goal but the breakthrough came via a set-piece. From Allende’s corner, there was a melee in the box as both sets of players tried to go for it and Jayden Adams had the last touch, directing it into the net for 1-0 in favour of Sundowns.
That was 17 minutes from time and Sundowns then maintained their attack as they went in search of a second goal.
Peter Shalulile makes PSL history
It arrived against the run of play with Matthews finding Shalulile at the edge of the box. The Namibian showed great composure to control the ball on his right foot before firing an unstoppable shot past Magesi goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze on his left.
The goal came after Magesi had been reduced to 10 men when Lehlohonolo Mtshali was sent off for a second bookable offence after stumping on Matthews.
Victory moved Sundowns to seven points from three matches, two behind joint leaders Kaizer Chiefs and Sekhukhune United, and it is a good warm up for their MTN8 semi-final second leg against Pirates on Saturday.
