Silva scores late to end Chiefs’ two-month wait for PSL win as Amakhosi move ahead of Pirates

Kaizer Chiefs ended their run of four league games without a win when Flavio Silva headed in a late winner as they beat Durban City 1-0 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday.

Chiefs huffed and puffed until the 87th minute when substitutes Gaston Sirino and Silva combined to hand them the win.

Sirino, who came in with 20 minutes to go, brought in a delicious cross which Silva, an 80th minute substitute, met with precision, the new signing getting a free header past Darren Keet in the Durban City goal.

The game had few chances of note with Chiefs getting the best of them, starting with Glody Lilepo, who was played in by Mduduzi Shabalala but failed to find the target after eight minutes.

After 13 minutes, Durban City had their first chance when Mfanafuthi Mkhize took a good shot from a corner but saw it sail over the bar.

There were no more chances for either side in a toothless first half and after the break, Chiefs made a host of changes in a bid to add impetus to their team as Pule Mmodi and Thabiso Monyane came on.

Thabo Cele would come on in the 63rd minute, before Sirino was introduced for Etiosa Ighodaro four minutes later and Silva would be the last to be introduced 10 minutes from time.

Those late changes yielded the winning goal but it could have been Durban City celebrating. The home side thought they had snatched a winner six minutes from time but the goal was ruled out for offside and three minutes later the pendulum swung.

With Chiefs laying siege at the Durban City goal, Sirino brought in a cross which was won by Silva who headed beautifully past Keet.

It was all Chiefs needed to return to winning ways in the league, ending a run of four PSL games without victory, having last won on August 30, when they beat Golden Arrows 1-0.

The victory saw Chiefs move to third place on the table with 19 points, two behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, and one ahead of Orlando Pirates, before those two face off on Saturday.
