Sipho Mbule: Former Orlando Pirates star explains where MasterChef is most dangerous

Published on by

Former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs has given his opinion on the qualities of Sipho Mbule and how he can score more goals.

Mbule scored his first Pirates goal last Saturday when Abdeslam Ouaddou’s team thrashed Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila 4-1 in the Nedbank Cup Round of 32.

MasterChef, as he is popularly known, unleashed an unstoppable shot just outside the box and into the bottom corner as his side made it to the Round of 16 and kept their quadruple dream alive.

Josephs was impressed by Mbule’s game and feels the criticism the midfielder has been receiving for not scoring is unwarranted as he brings much more to the game.

However, Josephs also wants to see more goals from the former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder but thinks that can happen if he is afforded time and space on the ball just at the edge of the box as there is where he believes the 27-year-old is most dangerous.

“People have been saying he doesn’t score goals,” Josephs said on Soccer Beat. “Give that boy time space around in the box. He will put that ball in the back of the net, and that’s what he’s done.”

“Because everybody knows with him around the box, even in the six-yard box, he can play a through ball for the winger. When he’s in the six-yard, that’s the quality of the MasterChef. Now you give him that space on the edge of the box with time and space,” he added.

“He sees the goal, my friend, it’s like he sees three sets of goals. People were complaining that he does not score goals, what do they say now?”

MasterChef facing tough competition

Mbule, who signed for Pirates ahead of this season, was one of the ‘undroppables’ but has seen little action in the last two months as Saturday’s game was the second match he was playing since late November.

He is facing a tough battle for the No.10 position at Pirates as Patrick Maswanganyi is also a specialist while new signing Andre de Jong and Relebohile Mofokeng have also impressed when deployed behind the striker.

Josephs feels Mbule has the qualities to thrive as the deep-lying playmaker and should embrace playing in the No.8 role if he is deployed there.

“So Mbule will find his feet. He’s going to need a lot of fitness in that eight position. I see the quality in him. He’s capable,” Josephs further stated.
