Stellenbosch boss Gavin Hunt revives interest in Kaizer Chiefs striker

Stellenbosch FC coach Gavin Hunt has revived his interest in one of his former players currently on the books of Kaizer Chiefs.

Hunt replaced Steve Barker at Stellies this month and is looking to turn around the fortunes of the club after a difficult first half of the season, when they ended the year in 14th position.

With that, the experienced coach feels reinforcements in key areas are needed and after the club has been linked with former players Jayden Adams and Fawaaz Basadien this month, Hunt is also on the hunt for one of his ex-stars.

As per multiple reports, Hunt is keen on signing Chiefs striker Tashreeq Morris, who has endured a frustrating year, since leaving the now defunct SuperSport United for Amakhosi in January 2025.

The striker had just spent two months with Hunt at Matsatsantsa before Chiefs came calling and he jumped at the chance to move to Naturena.

However, he has managed just 11 games at Chiefs with no goals scored and is yet to make an appearance this season, casting doubts over his future at the club.

Making his situation worse, Chiefs signed four new strikers in the off-season, making it a total of seven forwards on their books, which pushed Morris further down the pecking order and it looks like he might have played his last for the club.

Hunt is going back in for Morris for the second time this season after he came close to signing him for Durban City last September before the deal fell through.

“Yes, there was an interest, it’s just that they [Chiefs] stalled the deal,” Hunt told the media at the time. “I took Letsie [Koapeng] because he was available.”

“We had to make a decision, that is my call. I can take Morris tomorrow, but obviously now [I can’t] because the budget is gone,” added the four-time PSL winning coach, leaving the door open for a future reunion with Morris.

Now, it seems that time has arrived with the only difference being the fact that both of them could be working together again at Stellenbosch and not in Durban.
