Striker Rejects Esperance, Commits To Pirates – Report

Published on by

Esperance Sportive de Tunis have officially ended their pursuit of Orlando Pirates striker Evidence Makgopa after their transfer bid was rejected by both the club and the player, according to iDiski Times.

Esperance Sportive de Tunis, a club known for its consistent interest in Premier Soccer League (PSL) talent, made a determined push to sign Makgopa but were ultimately shut down by both the Buccaneers and the player himself.

Esperance had set their sights on Makgopa as a direct replacement for their outgoing Brazilian forward, Rodrigo Rodrigues. Makgopa’s powerful presence and goal-scoring record made him an ideal target, and Esperance's official approach was a clear sign of their intent.

However, the North African club’s efforts were in vain. Makgopa, fresh off signing a long-term contract, made it clear he wasn’t interested in a move abroad at this time. His decision, backed by Pirates’ rejection of the bid, puts an end to the transfer rumours.

EVIDENCE MAKGOPA’S RELEASE CLAUSE AT PIRATES

While the club's asking price remains a secret, it’s understood that Makgopa has a release clause in his new contract valued at close to R20 million, signaling his significant value to the club.

Esperance's recruitment strategy in South Africa has seen mixed results. They were able to land winger Elias Mokwana from Sekhukhune United, who enjoyed a successful stint that included a domestic treble and a Club World Cup appearance before his loan move to Saudi Arabia.

Their pursuit of Oswin Appollis, however, also came up short. Makgopa’s decision to stay is a major boost for the Pirates faithful. Since his arrival in 2022, he has been an integral part of the team's success, contributing to six major trophies, including four MTN8 titles and two Nedbank Cups.

His impressive tally of 16 goals and seven assists in 78 games underscores his importance to the team's attack.
