Mamelodi Sundowns great endorses Da Cruz for Kaizer Chiefs job

Mamelodi Sundowns legend Hlompho Kekana has commented on speculation linking Frenchman Fernando Da Cruz to the Kaizer Chiefs job.

Da Cruz was reported on Monday to have reached a deal with Chiefs in regards to taking over as their new coach following the departure of co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze.

The 54-year-old is no stranger to Chiefs as he briefly worked as one of Nabi’s assistants at the club in 2024 before leaving to take up a role at the Moroccan Football Association.

What does Kekana think about Da Cruz?

Da Cruz also worked for one year as the Technical Director of Moroccan side ASFAR, having been at Belgian side Mouscron, first as an assistant and then as head coach, and also managed French side Lille B.

“When I look at the guy’s age, I think he is in the right age to coach a team like Kaizer Chiefs,” Kekana said on SABC’s Soccerzone.

“I don’t know about his experience in terms of coaching a big team like Kaizer Chiefs. But I do know that for you to coach a big team like Kaizer Chiefs, you have to have the experience and the knowhow of the game.”

Sundowns legend wants one man at Chiefs

The former Sundowns captain then made it clear that Chiefs should be looking for an outright coach who will be in total control and not the co-coaching arrangement that was witnessed in the just-concluded season.

“But more than anything, you must be result-driven. The other thing I would love to see is Kaizer Chiefs coached by one man and that one man should be leading the whole team,” added Kekana.

Chiefs are yet to comment on the Da Cruz speculation but it appears like they have narrowed down to him.
