Sundowns legend slams Chiefs over ‘disrespectful’ behaviour against Simba

Former Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana has criticized Kaizer Chiefs for what he terms lack of respect for their opponents following their showboating against AS Simba.

Chiefs stormed into a 3-0 lead inside 26 minutes against the Congolese side in their second leg match of the CAF Confederation Cup and then started flicks and tricks in a bid to enjoy themselves as they protected their lead.

However, Aden McCarthy scored an own goal later in the second half but Chiefs had done enough to win the game although the manner in which they managed it has left Kekana disappointed.

What has annoyed ex-Downs skipper about Chiefs?

The former midfielder thinks showboating shows a lack of respect for the opponent and wants to see teams turn on the style with the aim of creating chances and scoring goals.

“My question is can you do that when the score is 0-0? Can you do that when the score is 1-0 against you? Can you do that when we want a winning goal?” he asked on SABC as quoted by iDiski Times.

“You have to respect the opponents…please. Because if they do that to you when you’re losing a match, I’m sure you can get a red card because you’ll want to kick [them].

“That’s something I don’t condone as a former footballer because I know what it means when you’re losing the match and people start doing showboating.”

Kekana thinks it is even risky to showboat as the opposing player could get annoyed and kick, leading to a needless injury.

“When doing this, dribble passing the defenders and going to score, I love it,” added Kekana. “There’s a player that did that this past weekend and I loved it. When it’s like this [showboating] you’re inviting injuries, people will get angry and [kick you].”
