Sundowns to make loss from Maseko sale as ‘bargain’ transfer fee is revealed

The financial details of Thapelo Maseko’s move from Mamelodi Sundowns to FC Copenhagen have emerged, with reports from Denmark indicating the fee paid for the South African star.

According to Danish publication Bold, FC Copenhagen paid approximately €800,000, which is equivalent to around R15 million, to secure the winger’s services. The 22-year-old South African international was officially unveiled by the Danish club on Tuesday morning.

The publication described the amount as a “modest transfer fee,” suggesting that Copenhagen may have landed a bargain for a player who has been on their radar for some time.

How much will Sundowns lose out on?

This is far from the €1.5 million (R28 million) fee that was initially reported and it now represents a loss of R4 million for Sundowns, who signed him in 2023 from SuperSport United (now Siwelele FC) for a reported R19 million after a deal to Belgian side KVC Westerlo had collapsed.

Maseko was a key performer for Sundowns, the reigning African champions, making his move to Europe a significant step in his career.

Maseko has committed his long-term future to the Danish side, signing a contract that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2030. He joins as the team prepares for both domestic league play and European competition.

Maseko’s Denmark transfer finalised

Reports last week confirmed that an agreement had been reached between the two clubs after Maseko expressed his desire to make the switch to Denmark.

While the fee may seem relatively small for a player from a CAF Champions League-winning squad, it is believed Sundowns were willing to facilitate the transfer to support the player’s ambition of playing in Europe.

As the summer transfer window enters its final weeks, Maseko’s move is one of several deals expected to be finalised. The winger now faces the challenge of adapting to the Danish Superliga, one of Scandinavia’s most competitive leagues, and proving his worth on the European stage.
