The ex-Amakhosi attacker has opened up about struggling with the weight of expectations

Former Kaizer Chiefs star Keagan Dolly has explained how he struggled with the weight of expectations following reports that he was the highest paid player in the PSL.

Dolly was rumoured to be on a monthly salary of over R1 million during his three-year stay at Chiefs, something he has since refuted, and he admits that tag brought him more problems, as he ended up trying to do more to justify it.

“There was a story on Twitter one day that I was earning R1.4 million and I was shocked as well because it is nowhere near that,” Dolly told Marawa Sports Worldwide.

How much was Keagan Dolly really earning?

“A lot of people did [believe the R1.4m salary] and that adds more pressure on me. People look at me like; ‘he is the highest player in the league not only at the club, what are you giving us, what are you doing.’

“Every time I step on the training or playing field, I have to handle myself this way because people expect that from the highest paid player. So that comes with more pressure and it gave me a sense of trying to do more than what I had to do.

“At the time, I felt like doing everyone else’s role and forgetting about playing my own game. That was lies and it just brought a lot of pressure.”

The attacking midfielder is still without a club

Dolly left Chiefs at the end of last season and is yet to get a new club, having revealed recently that he had a successful medical at SuperSport United but Matsatsantsa opted against signing him.

The player’s stay in Naturena was, however, a frustrating one for both him and the club as injuries and poor form hampered him.

It saw Chiefs opt against exercising the one-year option on his contract, leaving him looking for a new home.

His final season with Amakhosi was the most frustrating as he made just seven league appearances, failing to score, after managing 12 goals and nine assists in 51 PSL games in his previous two campaigns.
