Title race over? Mamelodi Sundowns coach responds

Published on by

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso believes the PSL title race is far from over despite his team enjoying an 18-point lead over second-placed Orlando Pirates.

Sundowns extended their lead on Tuesday when they beat AmaZulu 2-0 while Pirates were forced into a goalless draw with Stellenbosch FC which leaves them with a mountain to climb.

That took Sundowns’ tally to 58 points from 22 matches, while Pirates are on 40, having played four matches fewer.

With Jose Riveiro’s team having four matches in hand, which can see them narrow the gap to six points, if they win all of them, Cardoso is convinced there is still a lot to play for in the 10 games that his side are remaining with.

“still going to be tough, there is still a long way to go,” Cardoso told FARPost.

“I don’t take nothing for granted in life. I have a big respect for myself and for football. This championship will be tough because no one will give up from any side.

“And the advantage we have, we need to [protect] it as much as possible, and we need to be as strong as possible. We need to prepare ourselves very well. Any team can take points from any team in this championship if you don’t respect the game itself and give your best.

Will Sundowns kill off any hopes for Pirates?

“So, there’s still a long way to go. Let’s focus on the next match after that one [AmaZulu]. There will always be another one to prepare for, and that’s how I see things until the end.”

Sundowns have won 12 of their last 14 league games, a record that has given them what looks like an unassailable lead, that they will be looking to protect.

Cardoso can kill off any hopes of a Pirates title challenge this weekend as they play away to the Buccaneers on Sunday March 16 with a victory set to put them 21 points clear.
