Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Jimmy Tau has raised concerns about Amakhosi’s tactical approach and mentality following their goalless draw against TS Galaxy in the Betway Premiership.
Speaking during post-match analysis on SuperSport TV, Tau referenced key match statistics to highlight what he believes was a missed opportunity for Chiefs to secure all three points.
“Maybe if we make reference to the stats, you look at the chances or the number of attempts from TS Galaxy with shots on target and then you say how much threat was there,” said Tau.
Chiefs dominated the game, registering 19 attempts with eight shots on target, yet failed to find the back of the net. Tau questioned the decision-making from the bench, suggesting a more aggressive approach was needed.
“If you had to sacrifice one of the defensive players to add a striker… Sometimes you don’t have to replace a striker with a striker because you are creating so many chances and you only have one shot on target. When you look at the stats, you have more possibility of scoring, but then you replace a striker with another striker instead of adding a second striker to up your probability of scoring,” he explained.
Tau argued that TS Galaxy posed little attacking threat, managing just one shot on target, and Chiefs should have taken advantage by switching to a back three and adding an extra forward.
“Those guys only had one shot on target, meaning they were not a threat. So you sacrifice one of your defenders and sit with three at the back and add another striker to improve the probability of scoring higher. This is my take from this game,” Tau concluded.
Tau’s comments echoed those of former Chiefs midfielder Siyabonga Nkosi, who also questioned Amakhosi’s mentality after failing to capitalize on their dominance.
The result leaves Chiefs in fourth place heading into the AFCON break, with their next fixture scheduled for January 20th against Golden Arrows. A win would have moved them level with leaders Orlando Pirates on 26 points, a point ahead of defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns.
