WATCH: Petersen nearly comes to blows with Chiefs fans after Nedbank Cup loss

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen nearly came to blows with a section of the club’s supporters after their Nedbank Cup loss on Wednesday.

Chiefs were knocked out of the Nedbank Cup following a 2-1 loss to Stellenbosch FC, meaning they will not be able to defend their title, with Stellies doing a cup double on them after also kicking them out of the Carling Knockout early in the season.

A 10th minute penalty from Ibraheem Jabaar and a stunner from Devin Titus saw Stellies take a 2-0 lead inside 22 minutes before Flavio Silva gave Chiefs some hope with a well-taken goal from the spot after the hour mark.

Ugly confrontation with fans

However, Chiefs were still not able to get the second and winning goal and crashed out in disappointing fashion.

After the game, Petersen went to salute fans in the stands but was on the receiving end of some insults, something that got him annoyed, and he nearly punched some of them.

From a video posted on social media, Petersen is seen trying to throw a jab at fan before a steward intervenes and confrontation ensues with insults hurled from both directions.

What is next for Kaizer Chiefs?

Another fan goes ahead to sprinkle water on the goalkeeper who ends by hugging a young supporter. It is not clear what led to the circus but it was a bad show from the fans towards a player who has been outstanding so far as he has kept 13 clean sheets across all competitions.

Chiefs are now left with the PSL and CAF Confederation Cup to contest but will need to improve remarkably to have any chance of winning either or both.

The Soweto giants are third on the PSL table with 30 points from 15 matches, five less than leaders Orlando Pirates, while in the Confederation Cup, they have seven from four games, same as Zamalek, and one behind Al Masry, who they play next.
