Why in-form Bafana Bafana international Monyane missed Chiefs’ defeat to Sekhukhune

Bafana Bafana international Thabiso Monyane was a notable absentee on Tuesday as Kaizer Chiefs suffered a 3-1 Premier Soccer League loss against Sekhukhune United on Tuesday night at the FNB Stadium.

The 25-year-old former Orlando Pirates right-back had played all the initial five games where the Glamour Boys had managed four wins and a draw, conceding no goals in the process. It explains why the fans expected to see Monyane in the team that played Babina Noko in the midweek South African top-flight outing.

However, in place of Monyane, it was Reeve Frosler who was in the starting team, which raised questions about the well-being of the Bafana Bafana defender. Amakhosi defense was breached three times, the first thing that this happened in the 2025/26 campaign.

Where was Monyane against Sekhukhune United?

In his post-match interview, coach Nasreddine Nabi explained why the full-back was not in the squad to play Eric Tinkler's men.

“Unfortunately, for Monyane, he had a last-minute injury at training [on Monday],” the Tunisian opened up after the heavy loss.

“But we have full confidence in Reeve [Frosler]. He is a player that has demonstrated a lot of qualities in the past. He is a player who has been with us for a very long time,” the former AS FAR Rabat coach concluded.

The extent of the injury has not been specified, but it is not yet clear whether Monyane will be available to play Angolan side Kabuscorp in the CAF Confederation Cup fixture to be staged at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.
