Bafana Bafana captain and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was rewarded on Monday night for his exemplary performance in the 2023/24 season.
The 32-year-old won the Goalkeeper of the Year and the Interclub Player of the Year awards respectively. It was a massive recognition for winning the Premier Soccer League and African Football League with Masandawana as well as 2023 Africa Cup of Nations bronze with South Africa.
Despite losing out on the main category of the Player of the Year to Nigeria and Atalanta's winger Ademola Lookman, Williams was happy with what he managed to achieve. He beat Ahmed Zizo of Zamalek and Hussein El Shahat of Al Ahly to win the interclub award.
He then silenced Andre Onana of Cameroon and Manchester United and Yahia Fofana of Ivory Coast for the golden glove.
This win will inspire millions of South Africans
“I know this win will inspire millions of South Africans to believe in themselves, push boundaries, and never forget your dreams are valid. This is a wonderful moment for me, thanks to Caf for the recognition and I will forever be grateful to you,” the shot-stopper said after his recent achievement.
“I thank my support staff, family [parents, brother and sister, my partner and my children] for being there for me throughout my career. I could not have done this alone. Thanks to all the players, coaches and technical staff that have been with me throughout my career.
“I dedicate this award [to] all the goalkeeper coaches I have worked with throughout my career since I was a little boy. I thank Maurice Camelio, Grant Johnson, Deshi Bhaktawer, Andre Arendse, William Shongwe, Lucky Shiburi, Lee Baxter, Wendell Robinson, and the legend Kennedy Mweene,” Williams continued.
“I am forever indebted to you and thank you for moulding me into the goalkeeper I am today.”
