Wydad AC make U-turn on Rulani Mokwena’s transfer authority

Wydad Athletic Club have reportedly decided to reduce Rulani Mokwena’s powers when it comes to player recruitment after failing to be impressed with the club’s new signings.

Mokwena was given total authority on recruitment when he joined the Moroccan giants in July and he recommended close to 15 players whom the club brought in hoping for a change in fortunes.

However, most of them have been underwhelming, leading to an inconsistent run of results for the Moroccan giants, who are now sixth on the league table with 27 points, 12 behind leaders RS Berkane, who have a match in hand.

With the January transfer window now open, Wydad expect to be active once again but Mokwena will have a reduced influence this time after the club hierarchy decided not to trust him fully following the unimpressive performance of most of his signings.

How do Wydad plan to approach transfers?

As per Le Site Info Sport, Wydad will release a number of the players signed in the off-season, with new ones coming in, but the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach will now work with technical director Hassan Benabicha to identify the right talents for their project.

Wydad are looking to finish at least second and secure a return to the CAF Champions League, a competition they last won in 2022, and are currently four points adrift of second-placed Renaissance Zemamra, but believe it is achievable with the right additions to the squad.

South African forward Cassius Mailula is among players Wydad are reported to be happy with from the pool of talents the club signed on the recommendation of Mokwena.
