Zwane reacts to Kodisang’s Mamelodi Sundowns move – ‘I was surprised’

The South African heavyweights have made some impressive signings in preparations for the new season.

South Africa international Kobamelo Kodisang is among the new players who have joined the Premier Soccer League champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 24-year-old made a shocking decision to return to Mzansi after a six-year spell abroad where he played for several teams including the Portuguese top-tier outfit Moreirense. In the 2023/24 season, he played a total of 33 games across all competitions for the European team and managed to score a goal as well as create three assists.

Others who have been signed by Masandawana ahead of the forthcoming campaign are Brazilians Arthur Oliveira Sales, Kegan Johannes, and Asekho Tiwani.

Masandawana captain Themba Zwane concedes Kodisang's move back to South Africa surprised him. The 34-year-old is, however, thankful that his team has managed to secure the services of the quality midfielder.

“I was surprised, I was not following him on that side, but I was surprised when he came back,” the Bafana Bafana attacker told the media.

“He’s a good player and we’re happy that he took that decision and came back to try to win us trophies. It shows that [Sundowns] want quality players and a quality squad so that we can compete. He can dribble and create those goals.”

The Brazilians are determined to win the Premier Soccer League for the seventh time in a row. They will start there domestic campaign with an MTN8 quarter-final game against Polokwane City on August 11.

The Carling Knockout and Nedbank Cup are the other domestic Cups Masandawana will be chasing.

Internationally, Downs will be aiming at defending their African Football League crown as well as pushing for the second star in the Caf Champions League. They have also been included in the expanded 2025 Fifa Club World Cup.
