Zwane reflects on injury setback & opens up on tough Stellenbosch assignment

Mamelodi Sundowns captain Themba Zwane has revealed what it felt like to miss action for seven months after suffering an Achilles injury while on international duty with Bafana Bafana.

The experienced 35-year-old midfielder sustained the injury in October against Congo in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers. However, he is back in action for Masandawana and hopefully will be in action for the national team.

Zwane will be expected to play a vital role for the Brazilians in the Caf Champions League final against Pyramids, which will be played later in May. The veteran creative player has now reflected on his return from injury and how his teammates helped him.

“It feels good [to be back] because it’s the moment that I have been working hard to be part of the team,” Zwane opened up to the media.

“For me to be part of the team makes me happy, and I can see my brothers [teammates] are also happy for me.

“The excitement is there, and you can see how we are playing; we are doing well and winning games. The brotherhood and team spirit are more important.”

What is Zwane expecting from Stellenbosch

On Sunday, Mamelodi Sundowns will host Stellenbosch in the Premier Soccer League outing to be staged at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium. Stellies are chasing a top-three finish while Masandawana are working on getting their eighth PSL title in a row.

“Honestly, I am expecting a tough game because they were playing in the Caf Confederation Cup and doing well,” he stated.

Zwane has further pointed out Stellies dangerman who should be kept quiet, “I would say Lesiba Nku. He is a quality player. But to be honest, they have a lot of quality players. They are a hardworking team, so I can’t single out one player and say this is tougher than the other one. I feel like as a team collectively, they are stronger.”
