2026 WCQ Play-offs: Super Eagles captains dropped from confirmed XI as Chelle leans into all-out attack for Gabon clash

Published on by

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has once again shown a fearless streak, leaving captain William Troost-Ekong out of the starting XI for Nigeria’s crucial encounter with Gabon this evening.

The decision shows Chelle’s willingness to make big decisions as the three-time African champions chase a place in the FIFA World Cup intercontinental playoffs.

Nigeria face the Panthers of Gabon in the semi-final of the African playoffs in Rabat, with everything at stake. Victory will take the Super Eagles into Sunday’s final against either Cameroon or DR Congo. Having thrashed Benin Republic 4-0 in Uyo last month, Chelle has stuck largely with that core group but added an extra edge in attack.

The Franco-Malian tactician has gone for an ultra-offensive 4-4-2 formation, pairing Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams up front in what looks a direct, high-tempo setup designed to unsettle Gabon early on.

Eric Chelle’s lineup closely mirrors the one that dispatched Benin in October, though there are notable tweaks. Ademola Lookman returns from suspension to reclaim his spot on the left, while Zaidu Sanusi starts at left-back ahead of Bruno Onyemaechi. Semi Ajayi misses out through suspension, and Troost-Ekong drops to the bench.

Samuel Chukwueze, who provided two assists in the 4-0 win last time out, keeps his place on the right, with Moses Simon named among the substitutes. The midfield pairing of Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi anchors the team, while the backline is led by Calvin Bassey and teenage defender Benjamin Fredrick.

Nigeria starting XI

Stanley Nwabali; Bright Osayi-Samuel, Benjamin Fredrick, Calvin Bassey, Zaidu Sanusi; Samuel Chukwueze, Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, Ademola Lookman; Akor Adams, Victor Osimhen.
