3 reasons Emmanuel Fernandez deserves patience from Rangers fans

Super Eagles defender Emmanuel Fernandez has spent the opening weeks of the 2026/27 season under significant criticism from a section of the Rangers fanbase, Afrik-Foot reports.

The London-born centre-back joined Rangers from Peterborough United for €2.9 million in July 2025, broke into the first team under former head coach Danny Rohl last October, and finished the 2024/25 campaign named Rangers Fans’ Player of the Season.

That body of work has been quietly forgotten across a difficult opening month of the current season.

However, head coach Derek McInnes has kept faith with Fernandez even after the return of Ben Godfrey from injury, and Rangers have now won three successive matches against Aberdeen, Falkirk and Motherwell across the past week.

Why Emmanuel Fernandez deserves patience from Rangers fans

1. His defensive numbers are solid

The first reason is the most easily verifiable. Fernandez’s defensive contribution numbers across both the 2026/27 season and last season’s body of work do not support the narrative that he has become a liability at the back for Rangers.

His performance against Jablonec in the Conference League playoff first leg on 20 August produced 16 defensive contributions (the most of any player on the pitch), 13 clearances, four tackles, one last-man tackle and five successful duels from eight attempts, the sort of output that delivered Rangers their first clean sheet in 13 matches.

FotMob data from the 2024/25 Scottish Premiership had Fernandez leading Rangers for defensive contributions per 90 minutes at 10.8, a figure that put him inside the top bracket of Scottish top-flight centre-backs.

His current 2026/27 stat is even better, as he averages 11.8 contributions per 90 minutes.

The criticism directed at his speed of play and his concentration in possession is not entirely without foundation, but the specific claim that he is defensively inadequate is contradicted by his output on the pitch.

2. He’s played across several defensive combinations

The second reason is contextual. Any assessment of Fernandez’s current form has to reckon with the fact that Rangers have asked him to adapt to several demands in his 14 months at the club.

Analyst John Walker’s numbers on his defensive combinations sit at more than 19 different centre-back partnerships since he arrived from Peterborough in summer 2025.

Those combinations have been forced on Fernandez by injury rotations, three separate managers (Russell Martin, Danny Rohl and now Derek McInnes) each imposing a different defensive structure, and a new partnership with South African centre-back Olwethu Makhanya that is still only weeks old.

The tactical resets that come with each managerial change compound the problem.

Russell Martin’s possession-heavy build-up demanded a different set of positional habits than Rohl’s high-press German model, and McInnes has now arrived with his own defensive preferences that differ from both.

A defender who has spent the last 14 months translating between three fundamentally different tactical languages will inevitably look inconsistent on individual matchdays, regardless of the quality of the individual contribution.

The Fernandez-Makhanya partnership specifically is only weeks old and remains a work in progress.

They’ve contributed to two clean sheets in the past three games for Rangers, suggesting that the two players are beginning to find their rhythm, but demanding immediate defensive coherence from a pair in their first month together is simply not realistic.

3. His body of work earned him the benefit of the doubt

The third reason argues that Fernandez has already delivered more than enough for Rangers to justify sustained faith.

His 2024/25 season produced five goals from centre-back across 27 Scottish Premiership appearances, a productive run for a defender.

The recognition that followed made the point. Rangers Fans’ Player of the Season 2024/25 and PFA Scotland Team of the Year for the Premiership.

These awards came from separate voting pools that individually confirmed Fernandez as one of the standout defenders in Scottish football that year. That does not disappear across four difficult matchdays in August.

The international trajectory adds another layer. Fernandez received his first Nigeria call-up in March 2026, made his senior debut against Iran, and scored in his second appearance against Jordan on his first Super Eagles start.

That fast-tracked breakthrough into a very competitive Nigeria defensive selection process is direct external validation of his level, and it aligns with the interest from Bayer Leverkusen and Feyenoord that circulated over the summer.
