Why Abdullahi Bewene’s Banik Ostrava extension makes sense

Super Eagles defender Abdullahi Bewene has signed a new long term contract with Czech Republic side Banik Ostrava, bringing an end to months of speculation over his future, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 21-year-old had attracted strong interest from several clubs across Europe following an impressive campaign last season. 

Belgian sides Club Brugge and Gent, as well as Czech giants Slavia Prague, were all linked with a move for the versatile defender, and it appeared increasingly likely that he would leave this summer.

However, those reports have now been put to rest after Bewene agreed to a new deal that could keep him at Banik Ostrava until 2031.

The extension comes as a major setback for clubs that had hoped to sign him this summer, forcing them to turn their attention elsewhere.

Although the decision means he will have to wait longer for a move to one of Europe’s bigger leagues, staying at Banik Ostrava could prove to be the right step for his career.

Staying at Banik Ostrava will aid Abdullahi Bewene’s development

While it is common for young players to leave smaller clubs in search of bigger opportunities, Bewene has chosen to remain at Banik Ostrava, at least for another season.

That decision makes sense because, at 21, regular football is more important than anything else. The versatile defender needs consistent playing time to continue developing, and Banik Ostrava offers him exactly that.

He enjoyed an outstanding campaign last season and established himself as one of the club’s best performers as they finished third in the Czech League.

Remaining at the club will also allow him to continue building on that momentum. A move to a bigger club could have brought several challenges, including a difficult adaptation period and increased competition for places, which may have limited his playing time.

At this stage of his career, spending most matches on the bench would do little to help his development. Staying in a familiar environment gives him the best chance to improve his game while playing regularly.

It strengthens his Super Eagles chances

Another reason the extension makes sense is the positive impact it could have on his international career.

Bewene is capable of playing in several positions on the right side of the pitch, although right back remains his natural role and it was his performances in that position last season that caught the attention of Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle.

Those displays earned him his first senior international call up, and he went on to make an encouraging debut in Nigeria’s 2-2 draw against Poland before producing another impressive performance against Portugal.

With competition for places in the Super Eagles becoming increasingly fierce, Bewene cannot afford to lose regular playing time. Ryan Alebiosu, Ola Aina and Bright Osayi Samuel are all quality right backs competing for the same position, leaving little room for complacency.

By remaining at Banik Ostrava, Bewene gives himself the opportunity to continue playing regularly, maintain his form and strengthen his case for future national team selections.

The 21-year-old has already featured twice for Banik Ostrava this season and will be hoping to build on that strong start in the months ahead.
