Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman registered a goal and an assist as Atletico Madrid thrashed Barcelona 4-0 in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semifinal clash, Afrik-Foot reports.

Lookman maintained his place in the starting eleven as Atletico Madrid played host to rivals Barcelona. From the opening whistle, Atletico looked up for the challenge, pressing their opponents high up the pitch. In contrast, the Catalans appeared sluggish and lacked zeal; even their star man, Lamine Yamal, struggled to make an impact.

Atleti were rewarded for their hard work early on, taking the lead in the 6th minute after Joan Garcia failed to properly control a back-pass from Eric Garcia.

The ball trickled into the net despite a last-ditch attempt from the defenders. Initially, the goal was credited to Lookman, who had struck the ball after pouncing on an attempted clearance, but it was ultimately ruled an own goal following a review.

Just eight minutes later, Los Rojiblancos struck again, with Lookman heavily involved. He controlled a long ball from his goalkeeper in the Barcelona half and switched play to Nahuel Molina, who found Antoine Griezmann with a short pass. The Frenchman made no mistake from inside the box, firing a low shot into the net to make it 2-0.

Diego Simeone’s men were far from finished. Lookman got his name on the scoresheet in the 33rd minute following a fine assist from Julián Alvarez, sending a wicked curler into the top right corner to make it 3-0.

Fourteen minutes later, Lookman turned provider. Reciprocating the earlier play, the Super Eagles star laid a pass off to Alvarez, and the Argentine unleashed a piledriver that shook the net to complete the rout.

In the second half, Simeone’s men took their feet off the pedal, but Barcelona could not score. The Catalans put the ball in the back of the net once, courtesy of Pau Cubrasi, but it was ruled due to an offside. It eventually ended 4-0 at the Metropolitano stadium.

How Well Did Ademola Lookman Perfrom Against Barcelona?

Lookman had a great game against Barcelona. He was a thorn in their flesh.

The Super Eagles star’s runs gave Jules Kounde problems at at back, and he was decisive whenever he had the ball in the dangerous areas. Of course, he was rewarded with a goal and an assist.

Asides from his attacking efforts, Lookman also put in a solid defensive showing. He was full of running all night, making it hard for Barcelona to progress the ball through his side of the pitch.

The Super Eagles star also fell back a few times to aid his defenders. Unlike his counterpart, Yamal, who struggled to influence the game from the right flank.

The second leg of the fixture will be played on March 3 at the Camp nou, and Lookman will be looking to produce another solid performance for Los Rojiblancos.
