Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman returned to Atalanta’s starting line up in style, scoring twice as his team cruised to a dominant 5-0 victory over Empoli in Serie A on Sunday.

Following their disappointing midweek exit from the Champions League, Gian Piero Gasperini’s side bounced back with a commanding performance that left their coach delighted.

The 67-year-old tactician expressed his satisfaction with Lookman’s contribution and the overall display from his team.

“It was a beautiful victory, by virtue of the ranking and the results. The victory has brought us very close to the top of the league in my opinion. I am very satisfied,” Gasperini said after the match.

Reflecting on Atalanta’s recent struggles, he added: “History is always made by those who write it.

“We lost a match in the Champions League, but that's okay, we weren’t playing a little tournament. It’s okay to go out. If someone sees further than their nose, I’m very happy.

“It wasn’t easy, just like it wasn’t easy in Verona and Como. We were good.” he added

When asked if his previous criticism of Lookman had motivated the Nigerian forward to score a brace, Gasperini remained diplomatic.

“Lookman has always scored a lot of goals, at least since he's been with us. He's become an extraordinary player, especially when he made himself available to the team, becoming a super player.”

Voted Player of the Match, Lookman expressed his joy at returning to the starting XI and, more importantly, helping his team secure a vital win.

“I returned from injury last week, obviously today I returned to the starting line up. For me, it's always nice to play, and today getting the win was important.”

When asked whether his rift with Gasperini was resolved, the 26-year-old shrugged and responded with a cryptic, “Is it over?”.
