Ademola Lookman: Breakdown of Fenerbahce’s plan to sign Super Eagles star

Published on by

Fenerbahçe are monitoring Ademola Lookman as a potential replacement for Kerem Aktürkoğlu as Al Ahli prepare a €35 million bid for the Turkish international, Afrik Foot reports.

Lookman joined Atletico Madrid from Atalanta in January 2026 for €35m, ending an elongated transfer saga that had dragged through much of the previous summer after Atalanta failed to grant his preferred move to Inter Milan.

The Nigerian has since settled into life at the Metropolitano, contributing nine goals and three assists as Diego Simeone’s side qualified for the Champions League.

Those numbers, in a system as tactically demanding and defensive as Atletico’s, underlined the qualities that had already made him one of the most wanted attackers in European football, especially after his Europa League hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen in 2024.

Yet, despite his output at Atletico, reports from Turkey, per Mynet, suggest Lookman’s representatives are actively exploring opportunities to leave the Spanish capital. Fenerbahce have emerged as suitors, and the specific chain of events that could facilitate their move is now beginning to take shape.

Kerem Aktürkoğlu, who has been one of the most exciting wingers in Turkish football and a regular for the national team, has attracted significant Saudi interest with Al Ahli preparing a bid in the region of €35 million.

Should Fenerbahce accept that offer, they could potentially replace the 27-year-old with a higher-profile name.

Lookman has been identified as exactly that player, and according to Turkish outlet Fanatik, Mason Greenwood, currently set to leave Marseille, is also being considered as an alternative option should the Lookman pursuit prove too expensive or complicated.

Breakdown of Fenerbahce’s plan to sign Ademola Lookman

The structure of Fenerbahce’s move for Lookman is directly dependent on first completing the sale of Aktürkoğlu to Al Ahli.

That sequence is important because it explains why Fenerbahce have not yet made a formal approach and why the situation has yet to enter the negotiation phase.

Ismail Karta’s squad already carries significant financial commitments, and adding a player of Lookman’s calibre, whose Atletico Madrid asking fee would realistically sit above €50 million given the fee they paid just months ago, requires the financial headroom that Aktürkoğlu’s sale would create.

Al Ahli’s €35 million offer, if accepted, would provide approximately that level of flexibility while also reducing the wage bill, giving Fenerbahce the structural space to pursue a replacement of Lookman’s profile without going beyond their transfer budget.

The appeal of the move from Fenerbahce’s perspective is clear. Lookman is 28 years old, in the peak years of his career, and represents the kind of elite winger whose name and profile would significantly raise the club’s standing in European competition.

Fenerbahce are expected to compete in the UEFA Europa League next season, and a Lookman in that team, as a star player, would be a compelling prospect, especially in a less defensive system.

The Nigerian angle makes the story particularly resonant. Lookman has been one of the Super Eagles’ most important players under Eric Chelle, and his next club decision will directly shape his visibility and form heading into Nigeria’s AFCON 2027 qualification campaign.

Atletico Madrid provides Champions League football, but Simeone’s defensively demanding system has sometimes left Lookman in rotation rather than guaranteed starts.

Fenerbahce, where he would immediately become the marquee attacking signing and the focal point, could offer him something that Atletico cannot always guarantee, making him the Yellow Canaries’ version of what Victor Osimhen is to Galatasaray.

Whether Al Ahli’s bid for Aktürkoğlu materialises, and whether Fenerbahce move quickly enough to beat competition for Lookman’s signature if it does, remain the two variables that will determine whether this plan comes to fruition.
