Ademola Lookman transfer: Why CAF POTY must reject strong Napoli interest

Published on by

This summer promises to be a defining one for Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman, who looks set to continue his career elsewhere.

Although his contract with Serie A side Atalanta runs until the summer of 2026, the Nigerian international has reportedly informed the club of his decision to leave at the end of the season.

Lookman joined Atalanta from RB Leipzig in August 2022. After a slow start, he quickly established himself as one of the team’s leaders and arguably one of the most consistent forwards in Europe.

This season, the 26-year-old has continued to impress. With 18 goals and seven assists across all competitions, he has firmly cemented his place among the top performers in Serie A.

His brilliant form has not gone unnoticed. Several top clubs are reportedly monitoring his situation, with Napoli reportedly in the forefront for his signature.

Why Napoli might not be the right move for Ademola Lookman

Napoli, former Serie A champions, are said to be very keen on Lookman and are reportedly willing to meet Atalanta’s asking price.

With Champions League qualification in sight, the move might seem appealing on paper. But for Lookman, it could prove to be a wrong step.

He doesn't need to look too far for a warning sign — Victor Osimhen’s treatment at Napoli after winning the club their first Scudetto in over three decades is an obvious cautionary tale.

Despite his role in that success, Osimhen’s request to leave was blocked. He was later frozen out of the first team.

Lookman, who also had his own issues with Gian Piero Gasperini after the Club Brugge match, should take note.

The environment at Napoli may not offer the support and stability he needs at this stage of his career.

There’s also the case of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia — another high-performing winger — who was quickly linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

That alone should raise further concerns.

Lookman, the first player to register 10 goal contributions in three straight Serie A seasons, has little left to prove in Italy.
