The Round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2024) has come to an end, and the initial 24 teams have been cut down to eight.
As these eight sides contend with each other for Africa's biggest football tournament, let's take a look at each individual match-up.
AFCON 2024 Quarter-final match-ups
Nigeria vs Angola
Nigeria and Angola first met in a friendly match in April 1981.
These teams have clashed a total of 10 times, and those meetings weren't exactly one-sided.
Five of 10 previous skirmishes between Nigeria and Angola ended in stalemates. The Super Eagles came out on top on three occasions, while Angola won twice.
It's worth mentioning that there have been some memorable clashes between these outfits.
Nigeria's Samuel Okwaraji died when these teams met in the qualifying rounds of the 1990 FIFA World Cup.
The Palancas Negras also famously prevented the Super Eagles from qualifying for the 2006 World Cup.
DR Congo vs Guinea
The first encounter between these outfits took place in March 1968, in a friendly match.
This will be their third encounter at the Africa Cup of Nations, and their first in the knockout stages. Both teams previously met at the 1970 and 2004 editions.
In seven previous meetings between these teams, DR Congo emerged victorious four times. They suffered two losses to Guinea, with a draw between the sides.
The most recent skirmish between these teams was in November 2017, at the qualifying rounds of the 2018 World Cup.
Mali vs Ivory Coast
It's safe to say that Mali don't particularly look forward to meeting Ivory Coast on the field.
In 32 previous encounters between these teams, the Eagles managed just four wins. They've lost a whopping 19 times to the Elephants, with nine draws between them.
As a matter of fact, Mali have beaten Ivory Coast just once in the last 40 years, and that was at the African Nations Championships (CHAN 2016).
While these teams clashed 32 times, 17 of those were either at the AFCON, or in its qualifying rounds.
These teams last met at the AFCON 2019 Round of 16, where the Elephants won by a lone goal.
Interestingly, Ivory Coast have never lost to Mali at the Nations Cup.
Cape Verde vs South Africa
This will be the sixth encounter between Cape Verde and South Africa.
Four of five previous skirmishes between these outfits were FIFA World cup qualifying games, while the other one took place at AFCON 2013.
As it stands, both teams have two wins apiece, with a draw between them.
However, while South Africa came out on top the first two times these teams met, they have no wins against Cape Verde in almost 19 years.
Cape Verde won the last two clashes between these teams, with no losses in their last three encounters.
