AFCON 2025: Lookman, Super Eagles dazzle against Tunisia in match of the tournament

The Super Eagles of Nigeria booked their place in the Round of 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) after an enthralling, hard-fought 3-2 win over Tunisia on Saturday night in Fes.

Eric Chelle’s side controlled large portions of the game, but the match proved more intense than the scoreline suggested, with the Carthage Eagles refusing to go quietly.

Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman were instrumental in Nigeria’s attacking play; the former’s movement constantly unsettling Tunisia’s backline, while the latter schemed just in behind. The opening goal came just before halftime when Osimhen rose to meet a precise cross from Lookman, giving the Super Eagles the lead. Ndidi doubled the advantage early in the second half, rising above the Tunisian defense to head in a corner from Lookman.

Nigeria’s third arrived through a clever counter: Onyeka won possession in midfield, laid it off to Iwobi, who fed Osimhen. The striker’s quick thinking allowed Lookman to finish with a composed strike. Tunisia fought back with a late header and a penalty in the final minutes, but Nigeria held on to secure the victory.

The win sees Nigeria move to six points from two matches, ensuring qualification for the Round of 16 with one game to spare. Tunisia sit second with three points, while Tanzania and Uganda trail with one each after two games.

A point against the final group opponent (Uganda) would be enough to secure top spot for the Super Eagles. The victory also served as revenge for Nigeria, avenging their defeat to Tunisia at AFCON 2021.

While Chelle will be pleased with the result, the team will look to sharpen finishing and defensive transitions ahead of the final group game, ensuring they enter the knockout stage in the strongest possible position.

There is also the prospect of sweeping changes to the lineup in order to maintain freshness, with tougher challenges to come in the knockout stages.
