Nigeria’s build-up to AFCON 2025 has run into its first major hurdle, with Moses Simon unlikely to feature in next month’s warm-up match against Egypt in Cairo.
The winger, now at Paris FC and one of the Super Eagles’ most trusted wide players, is expected to be part of Eric Chelle’s final squad. But his club’s stance on early player release has complicated those plans.
RMC Sport reports that Paris FC will keep all their African internationals until 14 December, the same day Nigeria face Egypt. With that position unlikely to change, Simon’s chances of travelling are slim unless the fixture is moved, an option that appears off the table. His absence delivers an unwanted headache for Chelle, who has been counting on the 29-year-old’s experience and discipline on the flanks.

Simon’s case is also a reminder of the logistical squeeze facing African teams this cycle. Chelle has yet to publish his provisional list, but the uncertainty around availability is already shaping discussions within the backroom staff.
Clubs’ tight December schedule clashes with AFCON release rules
The 2025 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations is arriving at a particularly awkward point in the European season.
CAF’s release directive, backed by FIFA, allows national teams to receive their players from 9 December. But that rule has collided with one of the busiest stretches in club football, leaving the Super Eagles and many other nations unsure of who they can field for pre-tournament matches.

Nigeria could head to Cairo without several Premier League regulars. Fulham’s Samuel Chukwueze, Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey are all expected to be involved in their tie against Burnley on 13 December, while Tolu Arokodare’s Wolves are due at Arsenal that same weekend. Brentford midfielder Frank Onyeka is also unlikely to be released in time, with Leeds United visiting the Bees on 14 December.
The challenge is not exclusive to Nigeria. Egypt themselves are seeking clarity from Liverpool and Manchester City regarding Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush, with the Egyptian FA yet to receive a formal reply, according to Filgoal.
In a year where AFCON begins deep inside Europe’s winter schedule, both federations are already juggling preparation plans before their squads even assemble.
