Dutch giants Ajax are undergoing a mini-revolution in their attacking department. With reports suggesting the imminent departure of Chuba Akpom, manager Francesco Farioli is casting his net wide in search of a new striker to bolster his attacking options.
Enter Wout Weghorst, the towering forward from relegated Burnley, who has emerged as a potential target for Ajax.
According to The Telegraph, the record Dutch champions are considering a move for Weghorst in a cut price deal with the Clarets given the uncertain futures of Akpom and Steven Bergwijn.
Chuba Akpom's Amsterdam adieu
Despite initial expectation, Akpom's time in the Dutch capital has been a tale of unfulfilled potential. Struggles for consistent playing time, coupled with a reported desire for a more prominent role, have led the Arsenal youth product to consider his options.
His potential departure leaves a void in the Ajax squad, particularly for a player who can offer a physical presence and strong aerial threat in the penalty area. This is where Weghorst, who scored the winner for the Netherlands in their Euro 2024 opener against Poland, comes into the picture.
Akpom was heavily linked with a departure in the January transfer window, with Fulham and Nottingham Forest mentioned as his possible destinations, but the Ajax blocked his potential return to England.
Despite playing a bit part role for the Amsterdam side, the former Middlesbrough man delivered the goods, scoring fifteen goals and providing three assist in thirty-six appearances, eleven of which he started.
Akpom eyes next destination after Ajax frustrations
Speaking to Telegraaf, Chuba Akpom revealed interest from clubs in the Premier League, Germany, and France, suggesting a potential transfer on the horizon.
“To be honest, I don't know where I will be playing next season,” he siaid. “There is a lot of interest. But that makes sense given the limited playing time I got and the number of goals I scored.
“I am now 28 and feel that I am at my best physically and mentally. My goal is always to play as high as possible and for the best team imaginable.”
