Adams diagnoses Ligue 1 struggles, optimistic of Montpellier turnaround

It has not been the best season for Nigerian striker Akor Adams, as his Montpellier side are struggling at the bottom of the Ligue 1 standings.

The 24-year-old, who was part of Nigeria’s squad at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2019, moved to the French club from Norwegian side Lillestrom.

After showing initial promise, goals have become hard to come by.

In his debut season with Montpellier in 2023/24, Adams made a strong start, scoring seven goals in his first ten matches.

However, a combination of poor form and injuries disrupted his season.

Despite the challenges, Montpellier managed to avoid relegation, finishing in 12th place in the 18-team league with 41 points from 34 games.

Adams ended that campaign with ten goals and two assists, showcasing his potential in the French top flight.

This season, however, has proven even more difficult. Montpellier currently sits at the bottom of the Ligue 1 table.

After ten matches, they have only four points, having scored just eight goals while conceding a league-worst 30.

With a third of the season nearly gone, Adams remains confident in his team's ability to turn things around and secure their top-flight status.

Following a 1-0 away loss to Le Havre in a crucial bottom-of-the-table clash, he reflected on their struggles but expressed optimism.

“We are in a difficult transition at the moment, but hopefully, soon, things will turn a corner,” Adams said.

He emphasized the need for a shift in mentality. “We have to improve our attitude. A winning mindset works on a working mindset.”

Despite Montpellier’s poor start, Adams has been one of the few bright spots, contributing three goals and an assist in ten matches.

His performances have been a silver lining in what has otherwise been an underwhelming season for the club.
