Alex Iwobi reached another significant milestone for the Super Eagles during Nigeria’s 4-1 win over Gabon in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Africa play-offs on Thursday night. The versatile midfielder, who has been a mainstay in the team for over a decade, now boasts 90 caps for the national team.
The 29-year-old, who represented England at youth level, switched allegiance to Nigeria in 2015 and made his senior debut in a friendly against the Democratic Republic of Congo in October of the same year. Since then, Iwobi has been a key figure for the Eagles, featuring in major tournaments and helping the team achieve notable results on the continental and global stage.
An Arsenal Academy graduate, Iwobi has been part of some of Nigeria’s most memorable campaigns in recent years. He played in all matches as the Super Eagles finished third at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt and was also ever-present as Nigeria claimed second place at the AFCON 2023 finals in Cote d’Ivoire.

The Fulham star is behind Ahmed Musa (111), Vincent Enyeama (101), and Joseph Yobo (100), while Moses Simon, Nwankwo Kanu, and Muda Lawal are just behind him with 86 caps each. This milestone shows Iwobi’s consistency and longevity at the highest level for Nigeria, highlighting his importance to the national team over the past decade.
In those 90 appearances, Iwobi has scored 10 goals, the most memorable coming on October 7, 2017. His strike that day, against Zambia in Uyo, secured Nigeria’s place at the 2018 World Cup, their most recent appearance at the Mundial at this time. He also boasts goals against Argentina, England and Cameroon.
