Stats show Alex Iwobi deserved a birthday present in Fulham’s heart-wrenching loss

In a season where Alex Iwobi has finally found the goals to match his industry, the 29-year-old cut a frustrated figure as Fulham’s fading European hopes dimmed further in a 1-0 away defeat to Aston Villa.

The loss leaves the Cottagers nine points adrift of the final continental slot, a gap that now looks too wide to bridge with three games remaining.

On a personal note, Iwobi did everything to mark his birthday with a result. The Nigerian midfielder was once again one of Fulham’s most purposeful outlets.

Iwobi lasted 76 minutes on the pitch, tallying 33 touches and completing 17 of his 22 passes at a 77 percent accuracy. Although his deliveries from wide areas were uneven, just one successful cross out of two.

The Hale End graduate contributed two shots, including one on target, and completed his only dribble attempt. More tellingly, he won all five of his duels, a testament to the sharp edge he’s brought to his game this season.

With nine goals and six assists in 35 league outings, Iwobi is enjoying the most productive campaign of his club career. Yet, it is not being matched by the team’s fortunes.

Behind him, Calvin Bassey delivered another composed defensive display. The Super Eagles centre-back had 59 touches, completed 49 of 52 passes (94 percent), and made two clearances.

He also created a chance, hit five of six long balls accurately, and held his own in duels winning three of six on the ground. The Nigerian defender did, however, pick up his seventh booking of the season.

Fulham now require a mathematical miracle, with Villa and other contenders holding the cards. For Iwobi, whose personal renaissance has been one of few bright sparks, it’s a case of so near yet so far.
