Alex Iwobi MOTM performance lifts Fulham past struggling Brentford in London derby

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi put up a man of the match performance in Fulham’s 3-1 win over Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

The 29-year-old was at the heart of Fulham’s comeback at Craven Cottage, scoring once and providing an assist in a match that reflected his growing influence in Marco Silva’s side.

Brentford had taken the lead early, but Iwobi’s equalizer steadied Fulham before he set up the second goal to turn the tie in their favor.

The London derby marked Iwobi’s first goal involvements of the 2024/25 campaign. Last season, he contributed nine goals and six assists in all competitions and has now opened his account in decisive fashion.

Iwobi’s numbers vital to Fulham’s season ambitions

The former Arsenal star was central to Fulham’s attacking play throughout the contest. He completed 37 of 42 passes (88 percent), registered two key passes, made two successful dribbles from three attempted, and had 53 touches in 80 minutes before being substituted.

Such efficiency underscores Fulham’s reliance on the Nigeria international, who has become one of their most productive midfielders since his arrival from Everton.

The Cottagers are seeking to build on last season’s record-breaking campaign, in which they recorded their highest-ever Premier League points total but still fell short of European qualification. They finished 11th, 11 points adrift of seventh-placed Nottingham Forest.

This season, the West London side appear eager to bridge that gap. After five matches, they sit seventh on the table with eight points, keeping pace with the league’s early frontrunners.
