Alex Iwobi news: Super Eagles star nominated for another award

Published on by Godfred Budu

Alex Iwobi scored the winner as Fulham recorded their first win at Old Trafford since 2003. Before that triumph, the Cottagers were without a win in 18 clashes with Manchester United stretching back to 2009.

Not only did the victory earn Fulham all three points, but it also put an end to United's winning streak. The Red Devils had won their previous five matches.

On that note, Iwobi's stunner at Old Trafford has been nominated for Fulham's Goal of the Month for February 2024.

Who are the players competing for the same award as Iwobi?

The Cottagers have assembled a list of the top ten goals scored across all levels of the club, with the Super Eagles midfielder making the shortlist for his spectacular goal against Manchester United last weekend.

The 27-year-old will be contending with Rodrigo Muniz, who netted a stunning goal against Burnley, Callum Osmand from the U18s for his strike against West Ham, Rodrigo Muniz once again for his goal against Bournemouth, Callum Osmand again for his goal against Norwich's U21s, Rodrigo Muniz for his goal against Aston Villa, Georgia Heasman from the women's team for her goal against Actionians, Lemar Gordon for his strike against Middlesborough's U21s.

Additionally, Iwobi's compatriot Calvin Bassey was also nominated for his goal against Manchester United in the same game where, while Callum Osmand's goal against Everton's U21s also made the cut.

It's noteworthy that Fulham found the net eight times in the month of February, with two goals against Burnley, three against Bournemouth, one against Aston Villa, and two against Manchester United.

Why Alex Iwobi deserves the award

The sequence began deep in Fulham's territory as Tosin Adarabioyo cleared the ball upfield, igniting a swift counterattack. Substitute Adama Traore seized possession and embarked on a powerful run, causing the United defence to backpedal.

With precision, Traore delivered a pass to Iwobi, who skillfully evaded challenges from Diogo Dalot and Amad Diallo before unleashing a clinical strike from 15 yards out.

Iwobi's goal stands out as the epitome of teamwork, creativity, and individual brilliance. From the initial clearance to the incisive pass and the composed finish, every aspect of the goal was executed flawlessly.

Moreover, the goal's significance cannot be understated—it not only secured a vital victory against a formidable opponent but also showcased Fulham's ability to capitalise on opportunities and deliver under pressure.

Therefore, Iwobi's goal deserves to be crowned the goal of the month for its combination of technical excellence, teamwork, and its decisive impact on the outcome of the match.
