Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare expressed his delight after scoring and helping Genk secure a commanding 3-0 win over Racing Charleroi in the Belgian Pro League on Saturday.
Genk entered the match aiming to bounce back from a demoralizing 4-0 defeat to Union St. Gilloise the previous weekend.
The fans had been critical, but the team responded with a spirited performance at home.
After a frustrating first half that ended goalless, Genk turned up the heat in the second half.
Arokodare broke the deadlock, scoring his ninth goal of the season — fittingly on his birthday.
Further goals from Jarne Steukers and substitute Noah Adedeji-Sternberg sealed a comprehensive victory.
Reflecting on the game, Arokodare acknowledged the team’s persistence despite a challenging first half.
Arokodare happy with goal on birthday, hopes to do better in derby next week
“This victory feels good, but it was not an easy match,” he said.
“Especially in the first half, we had a hard time. Still, we kept believing and rewarded ourselves. The dance during the celebration is one from the old days.
“Especially on my birthday, it tastes extra sweet to score and also help the team.”
The Nigerian striker emphasized the importance of the result ahead of their upcoming derby.
“The win will help us regain confidence as we prepare for the derby against Sint-Truidense.
“We have to remember the positive elements and take them with us to the derby next week,” he concluded.
The victory elevated Genk to the top of the Belgian Pro League standings.
After 15 games, they have amassed 34 points with 11 wins — the highest by any team this season.
