Arthur Okonkwo back with Super Eagles: What has changed since his Nigeria debut?

Arthur Okonkwo’s first two appearances for Nigeria’s Super Eagles could hardly have gone better, Afrik-Foot reports.

The goalkeeper started both matches at the 2026 Unity Cup and kept clean sheets as the Super Eagles beat Zimbabwe 2-0 in the semi-final on 26 May and Jamaica 3-0 in the final four days later.

Now, four months later, Okonkwo is back in Eric Chelle’s squad for Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. A lot has changed since that first cap.

Arthur Okonkwo: From Wrexham uncertainty to a new start at Charlton

Okonkwo entered the Nigeria setup after FIFA approved his switch from England to Nigeria in April 2026. He had represented England at Under-16, Under-17 and Under-18 level before choosing to play senior football for the Super Eagles.

His international debut came at The Valley, the home of Charlton Athletic. Nigeria beat Zimbabwe 2-0, with Okonkwo completing the match without conceding.

He then started the final against Jamaica at the same stadium. Nigeria won 3-0, and Okonkwo again kept a clean sheet as the Super Eagles emerged champions of the invitational tournament for the second year running.

He did not play in Nigeria’s June friendlies against Poland and Portugal, but the two Unity Cup appearances gave Chelle a clear look at the 25-year-old goalkeeper.

His club career then took an unexpected turn. Okonkwo had spent two seasons at Wrexham and played 39 Championship games in 2025-26. He kept nine clean sheets during that campaign. Wrexham later signed Sunderland goalkeeper Nathan Patterson, and Okonkwo was left out of their opening Championship squad.

Okonkwo was unhappy with the prospect of becoming the second choice at Wrexham and Charlton stepped in.

The London club signed him on a season-long loan from Wrexham in August. He made his debut only two days after joining and produced eight saves in a 2-1 win at West Ham. That performance set the tone for his opening weeks at The Valley.

The numbers behind Okonkwo’s Super Eagles return

Okonkwo has played all six of Charlton’s Championship matches since joining the club.

He has completed 540 minutes, conceded six goals and made 20 saves from 26 shots on target. His save rate is 76.9%, according to Soccernet’s latest statistical review.

Three of those six matches ended with clean sheets.

He kept Preston North End out in a 1-0 win on 29 August, then produced back-to-back shutouts against Queens Park Rangers and Portsmouth on 9 and 12 September. He made two saves against QPR and three against Portsmouth.

The Portsmouth game ended 0-0 and gave Okonkwo a FotMob rating of 7.8. His QPR display earned 7.5.

His overall Championship FotMob rating is 7.23, while his three clean sheets put him joint-second in the league’s current clean-sheet table.

His brilliant displays placed him among the Championship’s leading goalkeepers in four categories. He ranked joint-fourth for fewest goals conceded, third for save percentage, joint-third for clean-sheet percentage and fourth for long balls per 90 minutes.

There has been one difficult night. Stoke City beat Charlton 4-0 on 5 September, with Okonkwo conceding four goals from his 90 minutes. His response was two consecutive clean sheets.

That is the main difference between Okonkwo’s first Nigeria call-up and this one. He is no longer arriving as a goalkeeper whose senior career is just beginning. He now has two international clean sheets, a full Championship season behind him and a new club where he is playing regular football.

His next chance comes with Nigeria. The Super Eagles face Madagascar on 25 September before travelling to Guinea-Bissau on 29 September.

Okonkwo’s two Nigeria appearances produced two wins and two clean sheets. His current club form gives Chelle more evidence to assess before the competitive games begin.
