Atlético 1-2 Barcelona (3-2 agg.) How Super Eagles star Lookman fired Simeone’s men to UCL

Published on by

Ademola Lookman produced the defining moment of the night as Atlético Madrid edged past FC Barcelona to reach the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, Afrik-Foot reports.

It was a tense night at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. Atlético came into the second leg with a 2-0 advantage from the first game, but that lead quickly came under threat.

Barcelona started fast. Just four minutes in, Lamine Yamal took advantage of a defensive mistake to score, reducing the deficit. The visitors kept pushing, and in the 24th minute, Ferran Torres added a second goal, leveling the tie at 2-2 on aggregate.

At that point, the momentum had completely shifted. Atlético were under pressure, and the home crowd had gone quiet. But this is where Lookman stepped up.

In the 31st minute, the Nigerian forward showed sharp awareness and composure. He reacted quickly to a fast attack, finishing calmly to make it 1-2 on the night and restore Atlético’s aggregate lead at 3-2. It was a crucial goal, one that ultimately decided the tie.

Lookman’s overall display was impressive. He worked hard off the ball, dropped deep to help link play, and constantly looked to stretch Barcelona’s defence with his pace. Before he was substituted in the second half, he had already created chances and carried a real attacking threat.

Barcelona continued to dominate possession after the break and thought they had another goal, but it was ruled out for offside. Late in the game, their hopes suffered another blow when Eric García was sent off.

Atlético, led by manager Diego Simeone, defended with discipline in the closing stages. Goalkeeper Juan Musso made key saves as they held on despite losing 2-1 on the night.

The final whistle confirmed a 3-2 aggregate victory, and Lookman’s goal stood as the difference.

A huge semi-final test ahead for Lookman’s Atlético

Since joining Atlético Madrid from Atalanta earlier this year, Lookman has quickly become one of the team’s most important players.

The Nigerian attacker has added speed, creativity, and finishing quality to Simeone’s side. Whether playing as a wide forward or closer to goal, he has consistently delivered in big matches. His goal against Barcelona made it two goals and an assist in four appearances against the Catalans.

In a short time, he has built a reputation as a player who can change games. He has already contributed six goals and four assists across different competitions and has shown he can perform under pressure, something every top team needs in the Champions League.

This victory is also significant for Atlético. It marks their return to the semi-finals for the first time in nine years.

Looking ahead, Atlético are likely to face Arsenal in the semi-finals, although Sporting CP are still in contention. Arsenal currently hold the advantage in their quarter-final tie and are seen as one of the strongest teams left in the competition.

Whoever they face, Atlético will need another big performance, and they will once again look to Lookman.
