Atletico Madrid make key decision in their chase for Victor Osimhen

Atletico Madrid have made a big step in their pursuit of Super Eagles and Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen, Afrik Foot reports.

The 27-year-old is at the centre of a transfer tussle between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona as both sides look to bolster their attack ahead of next season.

Robert Lewandowski’s contract at the Spotify Camp Nou runs out at the end of the summer, and at 37, a renewal is off the table for the Catalan club.

While he’s not featured as much for Hansi Flick’s side this season, his replacement, Ferran Torres, hasn’t been consistent in front of goal, meaning Barca have no choice but to prepare for a big-money striker hunt.

Atletico Madrid make first move for Osimhen

Galatasaray have slapped an €80m sell-on fee on the 2023 CAF Player of the Year, as they prepare to recoup the €75m they spent to get him in from Napoli last summer.

With Julian Alvarez linked with a return to the English Premier League, Atletico Madrid are looking to secure Osimhen’s services, in what would see him unite with his Nigerian compatriot, Ademola Lookman.

As per Fichajes, Los Rojiblancos are now prepared to go all-in for the ex-Napoli man after their coach, Diego Simeone, gave a go-ahead to the club board.

While Atletico want Julian Alvarez to stay, considering his versatility, they consider the departure of Alexander Sörloth to be a more viable option. The 2014 La Liga winners are planning a strategic move in the face of the uncertainty surrounding the future of Julian Alvarez in the short term.

Osimhen’s pressing and aggression would fit a Diego Simeone system like a glove, and the possibility of bringing two Nigerians to the club would bring success beyond the pitch in terms of media growth and sporting impact across continents.

While the player’s willingness to test himself in one of the best leagues in the world is something that could be appealing, the wage bill could be concerning for both Atleti and Barcelona.

Given the history of the Catalan club, Osimhen’s party might tilt towards a Camp Nou move, but nothing of such has been suggested at the moment.

Victor Osimhen has scored 15 goals in 21 games for Galatasaray this season across all competitions.
