What Ademola Lookman said after moving one step closer to Amuneke’s Copa del Rey record

Super Eagles attacker Ademola Lookman took to social media to express his excitement following Atletico Madrid’s progression to the Copa Del Rey final on Tuesday, Afrik-Foot reports.

Lookman saw 58 minutes of action as his Atleti side fell to a 3-0 defeat against Barcelona in the second leg of their Copa del Rey semifinal at the Spotify Camp Nou.

However, Los Colchoneros had won the first leg 4-0 at the Estadio Metropolitano last week and simply needed to avoid a defeat by a similar margin to qualify for the final.

It was a grueling match for Lookman and his teammates, as they were pinned back from start to finish inside a raucous Camp Nou. Lookman struggled to muster any offensive threat, spending most of his time defending deep in his own half.

The Super Eagles star was unfortunately involved in the buildup to Barcelona’s opening goal; his failure to close down Lamine Yamal quickly enough allowed the Spaniard to whip in a cross for Marc Bernal, who finished with aplomb.

Given the tactical shift required, it was little surprise when Lookman was replaced by Nahuel Molina in the 58th minute.

Ultimately, Atletico Madrid managed to restrict Barcelona to a 3-0 victory after a nervy finish, successfully booking their place in the final.

For Lookman, this represents a significant achievement, especially considering he only joined Los Colchoneros in January.

Following Atletico Madrid’s progression, Ademola Lookman is now set to become the first Super Eagles player to win the Copa Del Rey since Emmanuel Amunike in 1997.

After the match against Barcelona, the Super Eagles star took to social media to post a simple but determined message: “Next stop: Final.”

Winning the Copa Del Rey would be a massive milestone for both Lookman and Atletico Madrid, as the club has not hoisted the trophy in 13 years. They now await the result of the second semifinal involving Athletic Bilbao to discover who their opponents will be in the final.
