Michael Olise and his attacking partner Harry Kane will be looking to wreak some havoc for the umpteenth time this season when Bayern Munich welcome second-tier Magdeburg to the Allianz Arena for their DFB Pokal clash.
1. FC Magdeburg, sitting fifth in the 2. Bundesliga and unbeaten in four of their last five, travel to Munich with 7,500 fans and a 75,024-seat away end sold out.
They also carry a piece of history nobody in that travelling support has forgotten, as the last time these two clubs met in this exact competition, a fourth-division at the time Magdeburg eliminated Bayern on penalties. That was 26 years ago, but it is the only reason this is being talked about as anything other than a formality.

Bayern Munich vs Magdeburg: Form & Context
Bayern top the Bundesliga on 17 points from seven matches but have drawn three of their last five across all competitions. Those results are 2-2 at Augsburg, 3-3 at Viking Stavanger in the Champions League, and 2-2 at home to Arsenal, either side of a 6-1 demolition of RB Leipzig.

The one result that matters most here is the most recent one, which was a 3-1 win away at Freiburg on Sunday, the first match Danks’s staff ran without Kompany on the touchline at all.
Magdeburg have won three of their last five in the 2. Bundesliga, including a 6-1 thrashing of Karlsruher SC on 24 October that was their best result of the season. In between came a 1-1 draw at Greuther Fürth and a 0-2 defeat away at Dynamo Dresden on 18 October, their only loss in that stretch.
Manager Petrik Sander’s side now sit fifth with 16 points from nine games, two points off the automatic promotion places — a genuinely good second-tier campaign, not a struggling one.
On the other side of the pitch, Michael Olise has quietly put together six Bundesliga goals of his own this season, giving Bayern two players capable of deciding a game on their own even with Kane drawing most of the headlines after his Ballon d’Or win on Monday.
Bayern Munich vs Magdeburg: Head-to-Head
These two have only met three times, and Bayern have won the bigger prize twice. In the 1974-75 European Cup second round, Bayern won 3-2 at home before Magdeburg won the away leg 1-2, Bayern going through 5-3 on aggregate and lifting that season’s European Cup.

The one meeting Magdeburg won outright is the DFB-Pokal clash of November 2000. The then-fourth-division side drew 1-1 after 120 minutes before winning 4-2 on penalties, knocking the Bundesliga giants out of the competition. It is a brilliant story, but it is also 26 years old, and no single result from a different era of both clubs should carry weight on Wednesday.
Bayern Munich’s Dangerous Duo: Michael Olise and Harry Kane
Bayern Munich made history on Monday night, as their star man Harry Kane won the Ballon d’Or, become the fourth player to achieve such while in the colours of the Bavarians.
What a duo 🔥 https://t.co/G7KFirG34O
— FC Bayern (@FCBayernEN) October 27, 2026
He has built a reputation of being one of the most prolific goalscorers on the planet. This season, he has contributed ten goals and seven assists in 11 games. If he plays against Magdeburg, he could cause a lot of problems for them, especially now that he is riding on a wave of confidence after winning the Ballon d’Or.
Olise is also as problematic as his English teammate. The attacker has Nigerian roots, as he was born to a Nigerian father and a Franco-Algerian mother in England. But he ultimately chose to represent France at international level.

Olise joined Bayern from Crystal Palace three years ago, and he has contributed 33 goals and 43 assists in 73 games. If he starts on Wednesday, Magdeburg could be in serious trouble.
Team News & Predicted XI
Bayern are already without five first-team regulars, and with Borussia Dortmund in the league just three days later, further rotation from Danks’s staff should be expected. Head coach Vincent Kompany is unavailable after he collapsed during a coaching session last week.

Watch the midfield name in that Magdeburg XI. Felipe Chávez is on loan from Bayern since August and played the full 90 in the win over Karlsruhe — there is nothing in his loan agreement stopping him facing his parent club, and he will likely start against them.

The Managers
Vincent Kompany has not left hospital since collapsing at Bayern’s training ground last Friday.
The club says he is conscious, stable and undergoing further tests, and that he will be given all the time he needs — he had coached through a viral infection the previous week before admitting he pushed himself too hard.

Assistant Aaron Danks, backed by the rest of Kompany’s staff — René Marić, Floribert N’Galula and Daniel Fradley — has now run two matches on his own, including Sunday’s win at Freiburg, and will take the decisions on team selection here too.
Petrik Sander has been the man on the touchlines for Magdeburg since November 2025, and he will be the one in charge of this fixture. A win here would be a significant addition to his CV.
Bayern Munich vs Magdeburg: Tactical Preview
Danks is missing both starting centre-backs’ usual depth partner in Kim and a first-choice holding option in Pavlović, which has already pushed Bayern towards a more fluid shape built around Kimmich dropping deep and the full-backs pushing on.
Magdeburg’s 4-3-3 will look to use Atik and Iyoha in behind those advancing full-backs on the counter, the way they hurt Karlsruhe for six.
Mateusz Żukowski already has a cup pedigree of his own this season, having scored twice in Magdeburg’s first-round win, and a repeat performance against defenders unfamiliar with his movement would turn this into a genuinely nervy night in Munich rather than a straightforward rout.
The gap Bayern has to manage without Musiala and Díaz on either flank is real, but Olise and Kane have carried that attacking burden all season regardless of who else is missing, and a second-division back line kept intact through this competition’s first round has not faced an attack of this quality yet.
