Benfica target Zaidu Sanusi after Super Eagles star escapes red card in Porto-Famalicao clash

Published on by

Super Eagles defender Zaidu Sanusi is right at the centre of a fresh debate in Portugal following his involvement in a dramatic and controversial draw between FC Porto and Famalicão, Afrik-Foot reports.

The match ended 2-2 at the Estádio do Dragão, but one of the hottest talking points was a moment involving the Nigerian fullback that has since sparked a war of words among Portugal’s biggest clubs, including Benfica and Sporting CP.

The key incident came deep into first-half stoppage time. During a long throw into Porto’s box, Sanusi challenged Famalicão’s Gustavo Sá while trying to clear the ball. As he rose to defend, his arm appeared to catch the attacker.

Famalicão’s players immediately appealed for a penalty. The situation was even more serious because Sanusi had already been booked earlier in the match. If the referee had judged it as a foul, it could have meant a second yellow card and a red.

However, referee Sérgio Guelho waved play on, and VAR chose not to intervene.

That decision has caused an uproar. Benfica quickly mocked the call on social media, posting footage of the incident with a sarcastic caption aimed at Porto. It was a clear dig at what they believe was favouritism.

Porto, led by coach Francesco Farioli, responded strongly. The club argued that similar incidents involving their rivals earlier this season were also not punished. Farioli himself added fuel to the debate with a pointed comment suggesting that ‘grey areas are becoming greener,’ hinting at perceived bias in favour of Sporting.

The controversy has now widened beyond just one match. It has become part of a bigger argument about refereeing standards in the Primeira Liga and whether decisions are being applied fairly across the title race.

Late drama dents Zaidu Sanusi’s Porto title dreams

Lost in the noise was a thrilling match that had everything; early control, setbacks, and a dramatic ending.

Porto started well and took the lead in the 35th minute through Alberto Costa, who finished neatly after good work from Nigeria international Terem Moffi. They looked comfortable for long periods, but there were warning signs before half-time, including the injury to young talent Rodrigo Mora.

Famalicão came back strongly after the break. Sorriso equalised in the 54th minute, reacting quickly after a save from goalkeeper Diogo Costa.

The game seemed won when substitute Seko Fofana scored in the 91st minute to restore Porto’s lead. But in a stunning twist, Famalicão struck again in the ninth minute of stoppage time, with Rodrigo Pinheiro forcing the ball home to make it 2-2.

The result is a blow to Porto’s title push, but not a fatal one. They remain top of the table with a five-point lead, although both Sporting CP and Benfica have a game in hand. With six matches left, the race is still alive and moments like this could prove decisive.

However, as for Zaidu Sanusi, this season has marked a strong comeback after a difficult period with injury. He has not always been a regular starter, but he has been reliable when called upon. Porto have often avoided defeat when he plays, and his pace and defensive awareness have been important in key matches.

He has made over 20 appearances this season, contributing a goal and two assists, while also playing a role in European competition. There are still questions about his long-term future, with interest from clubs abroad, but for now he remains an important part of Farioli’s squad.
