Nigeria’s Super Eagles secured the top spot in Group D of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with a 1-1 draw against Benin on Thursday.
After Libya's victory over Rwanda, the Super Eagles had qualified for AFCON 2025 with two games to spare. Despite having nothing left to play for, Nigeria were still the overwhelming favourites.
Interestingly, it was Benin that opened the scoring, thanks to Yverdon-Sport’s Mohamed Tijani. The Super Eagles battled to get back on level terms and their efforts were rewarded after Victor Osimhen's header found the back of the net in the 81st minute.
After Thursday's encounter, Super Eagles fans made their thoughts known on X (formerly Twitter).
With his goal on Thursday, Osimhen is now second on the Super Eagles' all-time top scorers list with 23 goals in 37 appearances. It is fair to point out that his first-ever competitive goal for Nigeria came against Benin in 2019.
