Benjamin Fredrick: Super Eagles star’s biggest Brentford challenge explained after new contract

Published on by , updated on

Brentford have shown their belief in Nigerian defender Benjamin Fredrick by promoting him to the club’s senior squad ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League season, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 21-year-old has also been rewarded with a new four-year contract that will keep him at the West London club until June 2030, with Brentford holding the option to extend the deal by another year.

He first joined the club in August 2023 on loan from Nigeria’s Simoiben Academy. His performances for Brentford B quickly convinced the Premier League side to make the move permanent in April 2024.

To continue his development, Brentford sent the defender on loan to Belgian Pro League side FCV Dender for the 2025/26 season. Before injury struck, Fredrick made 15 senior appearances across league and cup competitions, gaining valuable experience in European football.

His promising campaign ended suddenly in mid-November after he suffered a serious knee injury that kept him out of action for around eight months. Since then, he has worked his way back to full fitness and has now returned to training ahead of Brentford’s pre-season preparations.

The club’s decision to hand him a long-term contract despite the injury shows how highly they rate his potential. More importantly, Brentford have confirmed that Fredrick will be part of Keith Andrews’ first-team squad this season instead of going out on another loan.

Fredrick has also continued to build his reputation internationally. The young defender has already become a senior Nigeria international and started four consecutive matches for the Super Eagles during the recent 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

His ability to play both as a centre-back and right-back adds another dimension to his game. Brentford B coach Sam Saunders has previously praised his bravery in one-on-one situations, defensive strength and willingness to learn, qualities that have helped earn his promotion.

However, while his promotion is a major achievement, breaking into Brentford’s starting eleven will be a far more difficult challenge because several experienced defenders are already ahead of him in the pecking order.

Four defenders standing in Fredrick’s way

Although Fredrick is now officially a first-team player, earning regular Premier League football will not be easy.

At the top of Brentford’s defensive order are Sepp van den Berg and Nathan Collins, who formed the club’s first-choice central defensive partnership last season.

Van den Berg is arguably Brentford’s most dependable defender thanks to his excellent positioning, dominance in the air and calm decision-making. He can also play at right-back when needed, making him one of the first names on the team sheet.

Alongside him is Republic of Ireland international Collins, whose aggressive defending, physical strength and ability to play out from the back have made him another automatic starter. Unless injuries or suspension intervene, the pair are expected to remain Brentford’s preferred centre-back partnership throughout the new campaign.

The next obstacle for Fredrick is Norway international Kristoffer Ajer.

Ajer brings years of Premier League experience and is valued for his versatility. Like Fredrick, he can operate both at centre-back and right-back, giving head coach Keith Andrews a trusted option whenever changes are needed. Because of his experience at the highest level, Ajer is expected to remain the first defensive replacement.

Fredrick’s most direct competition may come from Benjamin Arthur.

Arthur, another promising young defender, returns after spending last season on loan at Celtic, where he gained experience in Scottish football. Both players are regarded as long-term prospects and are likely to compete for the same development role within the senior squad.

However, Fredrick does have one advantage. Unlike 20-year-old Arthur, he already has senior international experience with Nigeria, having featured in World Cup qualifiers against top African opposition. That experience could help him earn the trust of Brentford’s coaching staff over the course of the season.

Can Fredrick play Premier League football this season?

Fredrick’s promotion means he is now closer than ever to making his Premier League debut, but several factors suggest patience will still be needed.

His biggest challenge is returning to full sharpness after spending eight months recovering from a serious knee injury. While he has resumed training, rebuilding match fitness and confidence will take time, especially at the demanding pace of the Premier League.

With Van den Berg, Collins and Ajer all ahead of him, Fredrick is expected to begin the season as Brentford’s fourth or fifth-choice central defender.

That does not mean he will be left out completely. Domestic cup competitions such as the Carabao Cup and FA Cup are expected to provide his best opportunities for first-team minutes early in the campaign. Strong performances in those matches could gradually move him closer to league action.

His versatility is another important asset. Since he can cover both centre-back and right-back, Andrews has more reasons to include him in matchday squads when injuries or fixture congestion arise.

Brentford, at the moment, appear to view Fredrick as a long-term investment rather than an immediate starter. The club’s willingness to hand him a contract until 2030 shows their confidence that he can eventually become a regular Premier League player.

The road to the starting eleven is crowded, but if Fredrick stays fit, continues his development and takes advantage of every opportunity, the Super Eagles defender could gradually force his way into Brentford’s plans during next season.
