Boniface, Awoniyi in; Lookman, Okocha out – Ranking Nigeria’s top-five Bundesliga goalscorers

Nigeria has produced several memorable goalscorers in the Bundesliga, from the generation of Jonathan Akpoborie and Victor Agali to the modern-day exploits of Victor Boniface and Taiwo Awoniyi, Afrik-Foot reports.

However, the numbers paint an interesting picture. While Boniface and Awoniyi have already done enough to enter Nigeria’s top five Bundesliga scorers, more celebrated names such as Ademola Lookman and Jay-Jay Okocha miss out.

According to data from StatMuse, five Nigerians have scored at least 21 Bundesliga goals, with Akpoborie still comfortably ahead of the pack.

5. Taiwo Awoniyi – 21 goals

Awoniyi has scored 21 Bundesliga goals, doing so in 64 appearances, with most of his German top-flight experience coming during his time at Mainz and Union Berlin.

His 21 goals may look modest compared with Akpoborie’s 61, but the striker’s efficiency stands out, with the now Coventry City striker averaging 0.33 goals per game.

More importantly, Awoniyi’s Bundesliga record was built before he established himself as a proven Premier League striker, making his German experience an important part of his development.

4. Victor Boniface – 22 goals

Boniface has already moved above Awoniyi despite playing significantly fewer Bundesliga matches.

The Bayer Leverkusen forward has scored 22 goals in just 53 appearances, averaging 0.42 goals per game, the same rate as Akpoborie at the top of the list.

That is the most striking statistic in the ranking. Boniface’s Bundesliga career has also been concentrated into a relatively short period, meaning his position is likely to rise if he remains in Germany and stays fit.

3. Anthony Ujah – 30 goals

Ujah sits comfortably in third with 30 Bundesliga goals from 136 appearances.

The striker’s career in Germany included spells with Mainz, Werder Bremen, Cologne and Union Berlin, giving him considerably more Bundesliga exposure than Boniface and Awoniyi.

His longevity, rather than extraordinary scoring efficiency, is what separates Ujah from the two younger forwards above him.

2. Victor Agali – 32 goals

Agali’s 32 Bundesliga goals came across 143 appearances, placing him second in Nigeria’s all-time ranking.

The former Schalke and Hansa Rostock striker belongs to a generation that helped establish Nigerian forwards as regular figures in German football.

His tally has survived for years near the top of the chart, although Boniface is already within 10 goals of overtaking him.

1. Jonathan Akpoborie – 61 goals

Akpoborie is in a league of his own.

The former Hansa Rostock and VfB Stuttgart forward scored 61 Bundesliga goals across 144 appearances, giving him a remarkable 29-goal advantage over Agali.

His 0.42 goals-per-appearance rate is also matched by Boniface, underlining just how impressive the Leverkusen forward’s scoring record has been.

Where are Lookman and Okocha?

Two of Nigeria’s most recognisable footballers do not make the top five. Okocha scored 18 Bundesliga goals in 90 appearances during his time with Eintracht Frankfurt, while Lookman managed five goals in 22 appearances for RB Leipzig.

Okocha was an attacking midfielder whose greatest impact came through creativity and individual brilliance, while Lookman’s relatively short Bundesliga spell limited his opportunity to climb the chart before he moved to Atalanta in Italy, where he became a household name.

For Boniface, however, the numbers suggest that this ranking could look very different in the coming years.

At 22 goals, he is already fourth, and unlike most of the players above him, he still has plenty of Bundesliga football ahead of him; he just has to continue scoring.
