Super Eagles forward, Victor Boniface has made a surprise return to training for Bayer Leverkusen ahead of their final Bundesliga fixture of 2024 against Freiburg on Saturday.
The Nigerian striker, who has been recovering from a thigh injury sustained during Nigeria’s AFCON qualifying defeat to Rwanda in November, was initially expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the year.
However, the 23-year-old’s accelerated recovery offers a glimmer of hope for Leverkusen as they chase Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich.
While Boniface’s return ahead of schedule is encouraging, it underscores a broader concern for the player: his recent injury history. This is his second significant setback in 2024, having also been sidelined earlier in the year with an abductor issue.
Caution necessary for sustained Boniface impact
Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso hinted at the possibility of Boniface featuring in the Freiburg clash but stressed the need for careful management. “Certainly not against Augsburg. We’ll see about next week’s match against Freiburg. There’s still hope,” Alonso said earlier in the week.
While his contributions have been crucial, scoring eight goals and providing one assist in 15 appearances, ensuring his fitness over the long term must remain a priority.
The focus now should be on a gradual and safe return to full fitness, allowing the former Bodo/Glimt forward to avoid further setbacks and continue his impressive form.
Given Leverkusen’s strong performances in his absence, with Patrik Schick, Florian Wirtz and Nathan Tella stepping up in attack, the club can afford to be patient with Boniface’s recovery.
A limited role in the game could help ease him back into competitive action without risking further injury.
For both player and club, the focus must remain on the bigger picture. With Leverkusen trailing Bayern Munich by just four points, Boniface’s sustained fitness will be vital in their pursuit of domestic and European success.
