Bayer Leverkusen star Victor Boniface has openly addressed his noticeable absence from the coveted 2024 CAF Player of the Year shortlist.
Though fans were quick to express disappointment over his exclusion, Boniface himself handled the news with a dose of humour that quickly went viral across social media.
CAF recently unveiled the top ten players competing for the 2024 award, to be held in Morocco, throwing the Bundesliga star out in the woods.
Despite a standout season with impressive stats, the Nigeria international's name was missing, leaving many stunned.
The shortlist did, however, include fellow Nigerians Ademola Lookman and William Troost-Ekong, highlighting the fierce competition among Africa’s elite players.
Victor Boniface's playful response to CAF POTY snub
Boniface’s light-hearted response came in reaction to a post on the X platform.
The original poster detailed the striker’s 2023/24 achievements to stress the surprise of his absence from the list. However, the Bayer Leverkusen man responded with characteristic humour.
“No worry, I no play AFCON. Na why I dey wait for memes d'Or,” he replied, playfully suggesting he’d be content with an imaginary award for his use of humorous memes online.
Besides his witty remark, Boniface also reminded fans of his Bundesliga Rookie of the Season honour and his place on the Team of the Season list.
At just 23, the former Bodo/Glimt hitman has clearly made his mark, even without a nomination this year.
CAF will announce the award winners on December 16 in Marrakech, celebrating players' achievements from January to October 2024.
