Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has emerged as a leading candidate to captain Fulham under new head coach Álvaro Arbeloa, Afrik-Foot reports.
The 26-year-old wore the captain’s armband in Fulham’s final two pre-season fixtures against Málaga and Stuttgart, a development that could offer an early indication of Arbeloa’s plan ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
Bassey’s growing importance at Craven Cottage is an appreciation of the growth that has happened since he returned to England after spells in Scotland and the Netherlands.
The Nigeria international has been one of Fulham’s most reliable defenders since joining from Ajax in 2023, making 30 Premier League appearances last season and starting 28 of them.

Under Arbeloa, however, his importance could go beyond simply being a regular starter.
The Spaniard has already identified Bassey as a player capable of leading his new-look squad, and two reasons appear to be behind that decision.
Calvin Bassey leads by performing on the pitch
For club and country, Calvin Bassey has established himself through his performances.
Arbeloa’s football is expected to demand an aggressive defensive approach, with Fulham defending higher up the pitch and leaving considerable space behind their defensive line.
That requires centre-backs who are comfortable defending large spaces, recovering quickly and making decisions under pressure. Bassey’s physical attributes make him particularly suited to that approach.
The Nigerian is quick enough to cover ground, strong in one-on-one situations and comfortable operating as both a central defender and left-back, as he did several times under former coach Marco Silva.

Arbeloa made that suitability clear when discussing his plans for the former Ajax defender.
“I see Calvin as a proper player, a top player for the style of play I want at Fulham,” the former Liverpool right-back said in his post-match Presser following their clash against Stuttgart.
“To defend so high with a lot of space in behind, he has everything, and I think he’s a top player.”
Arbeloa wants players capable of executing his football at the highest level, and Bassey fits that requirement.
Arbeloa sees Bassey as a leader
It appears the Spanish tactician values Bassey’s personality and attitude as much as his ability to kick a ball.

The Fulham boss described the defender as someone who enjoys himself away from the work but becomes extremely serious when it is time to train.
“He’s a funny guy, but when we have to work, he’s the first one. I really love him, and I want him to be our leader.”
The manager also explained why experienced figures will be particularly important this season, with Fulham undergoing a significant squad transition.
“With Sander, Jedi (Antonee Robinson), and Leno, they have experience, and we need that group of players because we have a younger squad than last season, so players with experience are important for us.”
Bassey is being considered alongside Sander Berge, Antonee Robinson and goalkeeper Bernd Leno as part of the experienced core Arbeloa expects to guide a younger Fulham squad.

His recent appointment as captain against Málaga and Stuttgart only strengthens the impression that the Nigerian is being prepared for greater responsibility.
For Bassey, it is another step in his development at Fulham. He has already established himself as a dependable Premier League defender and an important member of Nigeria’s squad.
It’ll be interesting to see how things shape up at the Craven Cottage this season, with Calvin Bassey entering the final year of his Fulham contract.
