Calvin Bassey to Galatasaray? Fulham clause could block summer move

Published on by

Galatasaray have kept a close watch on Calvin Bassey for months, and the Nigerian defender remains one of their main targets ahead of the summer transfer window, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Turkish champions are keen to strengthen the left side of their defence, an area where they currently lack depth and balance.

Bassey’s ability to play both as a centre-back and a left-back makes him an attractive option. At present, Galatasaray rely heavily on Abdülkerim Bardakcı as their only natural left-footed central defender. That has pushed the club to prioritise a signing in that position, and Bassey has emerged as one of the most suitable candidates.

The 26-year-old Fulham star, one of Nigeria’s most valuable players, has been on Galatasaray’s radar since late 2025. Talks did not progress during the January window, largely because Fulham were unwilling to sell a key player in the middle of a strong campaign as they chased European qualification.

Bassey is understood to be open to a move, especially with the chance to link up at club level with his international teammate Victor Osimhen. However, Galatasaray are not alone in their interest. Inter Milan have also been monitoring the defender, adding further competition to any potential deal.

A summer move now looks more realistic, when clubs are more willing to negotiate. But even then, the path to a transfer is far from straightforward.

Calvin Bassey: The contract clause that could drive up the price

The biggest obstacle in any deal lies in Calvin Bassey’s contract situation at Fulham, according to Fotospor.

On paper, his current deal runs until 2027. Under normal circumstances, that would place him in the final year of his contract by the summer of 2026, which often reduces a player’s market value.

However, Fulham hold a one-year extension option that changes everything.

This clause allows the club to extend Bassey’s contract until 2028 without needing the player’s approval. That gives Fulham full control over the situation and removes any pressure to sell at a lower price. In simple terms, the decision rests entirely with the club.

If Fulham activate that option, they can demand a significantly higher transfer fee. Current estimates already place Bassey’s valuation between £25 million and £30 million, and that figure could rise further if his contract is extended. This makes negotiations more difficult for Galatasaray. Even if the Turkish side are ready to move forward, they will have to meet Fulham’s demands or walk away.

For now, Galatasaray’s interest remains strong in Bassey, who is currently recovering from a back injury, which forced him to withdraw from Nigeria’s recent friendly matches.

But with Fulham firmly in control and other clubs watching closely, any move for Bassey will depend less on the player’s wishes and more on the terms set in west London.
