Super Eagles centre-back Calvin Bassey is the latest subject of interest from Record English Premier League Champions Manchester United.
The 26-year-old has become an important figure at Craven Cottage, with his influence growing to the point where he has been entrusted with the captain’s armband under manager Álvaro Arbeloa.
His current contract expires in the summer of 2027, but Fulham have an option to extend it by another year. The club are also interested in negotiating fresh terms with the Nigerian, whose performances have also piqued attention from several European sides, including Inter Milan.
United’s interest could complicate those discussions, especially if the defender believes a move to Old Trafford will hand him an opportunity to compete at a higher level than what the Cottagers currently offer.

Why Manchester United want Calvin Bassey
United are assessing their defensive options as they approach a period of uncertainty at the back. TEAMtalk reports that Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martínez and Harry Maguire are all in the final year of their contracts.
The situation has forced the club to consider potential reinforcements, with Bassey emerging as one of the names on their radar.
The Nigerian offers something very useful to Michael Carrick’s side, as he has the ability to operate at both centre-back and left-back. His versatility could help United address more than one positional flaw without having to recruit separate players for both roles.

Bassey also brings Premier League experience, having established himself at Fulham since joining from Ajax in July 2023, playing over 100 top-flight games.
His development in England has been significant. After winning Fulham’s Player of the Season award for the 2024/25 campaign, he has maintained his importance to the team and now carries additional responsibility as captain.
That progress makes the interest from a club of United’s stature understandable, although there is no indication that the Red Devils have submitted a formal offer.
Fulham still have an advantage in Bassey negotiations
Despite the growing interest, Fulham are not facing an immediate threat of losing Bassey for nothing.
The extension clause in his contract gives the London club protection until June 2028 if they choose to activate it. That is an important distinction because it means potential suitors cannot simply assume he will become a free agent next summer.
However, triggering the option would not necessarily end discussions over a longer agreement. Fulham would still need to convince Bassey that his ambitions and financial expectations can be met at Craven Cottage.

United are also not alone in monitoring the defender. The report revealed that Newcastle United and Everton are following his situation, while Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig have also shown interest.
That competition could strengthen Bassey’s negotiating position, especially if more clubs decide to pursue him.
As Afrik-Foot previously reported, Fulham already face a delicate decision over the Nigerian’s contract, with Inter Milan also monitoring developments.
The interest from Manchester United adds another dimension to that situation. Fulham have the option to protect their asset by extending his contract for another year, but they must also consider whether that action is enough to convince one of their most important defenders to stay beyond what that protection offers.
For Bassey, the prospect of joining United would represent a major career change, a huge step up regardless of the current state of the club.

For Fulham, the priority would be to ensure that the growing interest does not turn a contract negotiation into a battle to retain a key player.
