Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has been linked with a transfer to reigning Serie A champions Inter Milan, Afrik-Foot reports.
The Italian giants are looking to bring in defensive reinforcements in January or next summer. With players like Benjamin Pavard and Alessandro Bastoni potentially leaving, the club is already making plans for possible replacements.
Bassey presents an opportunity Inter can jump on, as he has less than a year left on his Fulham contract and will be a free agent next summer.

The Super Eagles star has distinguished himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League. He has been a consistent rock at the back for the Cottagers, even winning the Player of the Season award two seasons ago. His brilliance has also seen him named vice-captain under new coach Alvaro Arbeloa.
The 26-year-old looks like a natural fit for Italian football, as he is physically solid, quick, and technically sound.

Given his contract situation and Inter Milan’s interest, a Serie A move now seems very likely. In fact, from January, he will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement if the status quo remains unchanged.
However, there might be a few roadblocks that could prevent the transfer from happening.
Fulham Will Try To Keep Calvin Bassey
Although Fulham have not successfully extended Bassey’s contract, the club still rates him highly. He has been a key player, and as such, they will likely push for a contract extension soon.

In fairness to them, they are in a transition period under Alvaro Arbeloa and are bedding in several new signings, meaning the club has had multiple priorities to manage.
Given that Fulham signed Bassey during a low point in his career, alongside the time he has spent at Craven Cottage, he will likely have an emotional attachment to the club. As a result, he might be open to accepting an extension.
Can Calvin Bassey Break Into Inter’s XI?
Joining Inter would offer Bassey the chance to play for one of Europe’s most established clubs, but it would not guarantee a starting position. The Nerazzurri operate with a three-man defensive system, and Bassey would have to compete with established options for a place in the back line.

Alessandro Bastoni remains a key figure on the left side of Inter’s defence, while Benjamin Pavard, Yann Bisseck and Manuel Akanji provide further competition in central defensive roles. Inter have also strengthened their squad with the arrival of John Stones, adding another experienced option to the defensive group.
Bassey’s versatility could work in his favour. His experience as both a centre-back and left-back gives him more than one route into the team, and his ability to defend space could suit a side that asks its defenders to contribute to build-up play.
But adapting to Inter’s tactical demands would still be a challenge. He would need to shoe that he can operate consistently in a high-level back three, make quick decisions in possession and compete with defenders who already understand the club’s system.
Contract Negotiations Could Keep Him at Fulham

Bassey’s current contract is due to expire in the summer of 2027, but Fulham club hold an option to extend it by another year, potentially keeping him at Craven Cottage until 2028.
That clause gives Fulham valuable protection. Even if Inter are interested in signing Bassey as a free agent, the Premier League club are not facing an immediate situation in which they must lose him without compensation.
It is now left to be seen how Fulham will explore the extra year option. But Bassey will likely have a say in that before it happens.
