Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey delivered a scathing assessment of Manchester United, asserting that his team, Fulham, ‘wanted it more' following their historic 2-1 victory over the Red Devils at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Bassey scored the opening goal for the Cottagers that day, marking his first goal for Fulham in the Premier League since joining from Ajax last year.
Harry Maguire's late equaliser seemed to secure a point for the hosts, before fellow Nigerian Alex Iwobi scored the winner in stoppage time.
Fulham's last Premier League win at Old Trafford before last Saturday's victory, occurred 21 years ago during Chris Coleman's management.
With the Cottagers having won only one of their last eight matches, Manchester United were likely confident in extending their winning streak against Fulham.
The victory not only halted United's five-game winning streak across all competitions but also signified Fulham's second away win this campaign.
Bassey shares bold assessment of Manchester United
After Fulham's historic victory over Manchester United, Bassey shared his perspective on the match.
The 24-year-old highlighted the quality of United's players and their esteemed manager but emphasised Fulham's determination and belief in securing the win.
He remarked, “I don't think you can just come here and overrun them. You can see the quality of the players they have… we were just at it more and I felt we wanted it more.”
Bassey continued, expressing confidence in Fulham's abilities, stating, “Of course we had belief. If you saw the last games we played… it was just the details and making sure we got the details right. It worked out for us, thank God.”
Bassey credits manager Marco Silva for Fulham's strong work ethic
The Nigerian further emphasised the team's commitment to hard work and effort.
He credited Silva for instilling a strong desire within the squad, stating, “100 per cent,” when asked if their desire is instilled into them by the coach
He highlighted Fulham's dedication to their foundational principle of hard work, explaining, “Even if we are not good on the ball, the minimum we can do is work as hard as the team we are playing or more. That is our foundation, and I think we have done that well throughout the season.”
Bassey acknowledged the variability of results, noting, “Some results have been unlucky and some results have gone our way.”
